Five Mistakes Step-Parents Make

Blended families account for a growing number of families and a lot of therapeutic work is being dedicated to addressing the unique challenges they face. Having taught classes for hundreds of divorced parents I have see certain issues arise consistently. I think that most step-parents have good intentions but many are unprepared for the stress and conflict that can arise when they begin dating or marry someone with children. Below, is a list I have compiled of five mistakes commonly made by step-parents (and biological parents for the matter).

Hopefully, awareness will help you be able to take measures to avoid or minimize making these mistakes. Making these changes in how you interact with your step-child(ren) can provide significant improvement in the relationships within the new blended family and increased self-esteem (and improved behavior) in the child(ren).

1. Badmouthing The Other Parent - This is very common and can be extremely detrimental to a child's self-esteem and your relationship with your step-children.

No matter how difficult a situation may be you must not forget that your stepchild is 50% their mother and 50% their father, so to insult the other parent is to insult a part of them. Even if the child has negative feelings about the other parent (which they should be allowed to feel and express), you should not join in the conversation.

Parents have told me they make comments about the other parent when they believe the child cannot hear them. In reality, the child may be in the car or the house and overhear you. In some cases, comments about the other parent are made in front of the child. This is something that should be avoided at all costs. Do not allow your friends or family, or the biological parent, to make negative comments about the other parent in front of the child. This is a form of parental alienation co-parenting professionals call tribal warfare. It is hurtful to the child and can be very confusing as well. If you must discuss/complain about the other parent do it when the child is not home or with you.

2. Pretending The Other Parent Doesn't Exist - This can be a more subtle form of parental alienation but can be just as hurtful as negative comments/words. Pretending the other parent does not exist sends both overt and covert messages to the child(ren) that they are not allowed to talk about the other parent or the time they spend with other parent.

I understand that there may be a lot of conflict or negative feelings about the other parent but this is when you as an adult need to suck it up and must do what's best for the child(ren). This is your responsibility as an adult and parent. I don't think most people do this intentionally. In fact, they might not even be aware of how/what they are doing.

I suggest you take time to reflect and honestly assess your actions and/or words. Do you (as parents) allow pictures of the other parent in the house or the child's room? While you may not want pictures of the other parent on the mantle, is the child allowed the have pictures up in their room or are there pictures in a photo album? A child's room should be a safe place for them to have pictures of those they love. Do you get angry or make disparaging comments when the child brings up memories or time spent with the other parent? Awareness is key to making changes in behavior so please take time to understand what messages you are sending.

3. Participating In Discipline But Not Praise And Support - I've seen many a step-parent willing to take part in discipline or providing negative feedback but miss or ignore the chance to provide positive feedback, love and support. Acknowledging when a child does something good is just as important, possibly even more important than disciplining bad behavior. How do you feel about a boss who only criticizes you and never provides positive feedback? Would you respect that person and what they have to say? Would you want to continue to work there?

4. Not Acknowledging The Impact Of Marriage And New Children - No matter what the situation with the biological parents, when a parent begins to date and especially when they remarry is often a difficult time for the children. Many children still hold onto the fantasy that their parents will somehow reconcile and get back together. This is seen even in families where there was domestic violence. Just be aware that this may be a difficult transition for the children and expect that there may be some acting out, withdrawal or regressive behaviors.

Depending on the age of the child and the situation you may see many different behaviors; from bed wetting, baby talk, clingy behavior, visitation refusal, to aggression, getting in trouble at home and/or school. You can still show compassion and understanding while maintaining rules/structure. Talking to children about their feelings and having extra patience during this time is of paramount importance.

This is especially true when a new baby enters the equation. A new sibling can bring up these issues in an intact family but are amplified in blended families as they may feel replaced or on the outside of the "new" family.

5. Not Allowing Bonding Time With Biological Parent And Children - This is a suggestion that I give to all parents but one that is especially important in blended families.

Allowing children individual time with their biological parent is important for parent and child. It's important that each child has time where they don't feel they have to compete with the step-parent or other children for time/love/attention of their biological parent. Even though time may be scarce, each parent should spend quality time with their child(ren), including step-parent/step-children. It could be anything from a breakfast out together to a day of activity. Even if it's only every other month, having scheduled time together gives children something to look forward to. If a child who only has every other weekend with a parent then this time becomes even more important.

I hope this gives you some ideas on effective step-parenting and/or has created some awareness of how you may be able to improve your relationship with your step-children (or own child) and hopeful reduce or avoid future conflict.

Internet Marketing - Linking Is Dead - Long Live Linking

It's amazing to see such a massive amount of misguided information on Internet Marketing that is being spread around the Internet, all by dim-witted, so called webmasters! Drop one of these webmasters a quick email and he'll reply with whatever he thinks is the truth. Here are some samples that we have received from webmasters in response to a reciprocal link request;

"You must have a Page Rank of at least 6 for us to even consider you"

"We no longer have a links page, as Google doesn't no longer gives any consideration to links anymore"

"Unless our link is within one click of your home page, don't bother"

The amount of short-sighted emails we receive like this is staggering. It always makes me wonder why they bother in the first place. I mean, why not just ignore the request and go back to whatever they were doing anyway? It would save our time and our client's money if they just kept that sort of dribble to themselves! There's no actual proof that any of the above is true, we should know, we've looked for it!! It is ignorance on behalf of these webmasters, are they just plain stupid or are they on some sort of ego trip, sure of their facts (which are wrong) and have to spread the gospel to all and sundry? No one ever mentions linking, it's always what the Search Engines will do. This traffic, from both one way and reciprocal links, result in consistent pre-qualified traffic.

Linking strategies should always be implemented for the sake of and intention of linking itself. After all, it should be your visitors and their needs you should be catering for, not search engines. Google announced a few years ago that from their inception, they had always used linking as the most important part of the listing algorithm and it heavily influences the Google Page Rank. Which is ironic if you consider the typical response we now see on a regular basis. However, if linking is truly dead, as the doom merchants seem so keen to inform us, then why do the likes of Google et al not announce it? Why is Page Rank still so important and why is the back link information so readily available at Google? Also, if linking is dead, how will search engines actual spider the web? The whole premise of the search engines like Google is the ability to go from site to site, using the links as highways from one website to another. Most SEO websites have no linking strategies.

They analyze and digest information, regurgitate their version of it and have a low Page Rank with no web presence. They don't practice what they preach. Now is the time to take the plunge! That's what it's says on our home page and that is our strategy. Now is the time to link, link and then link some more! There is no alternative It's time to stop thinking about the search engines and start thinking about your visitors, build your website for them and the search engines will push you up to the top of the list. After all, search engines are spending millions of pounds in creating relevant search technologies to do just that! Quality content belongs only on quality websites, it's trusted by others by getting savvy webmasters to swap links. Each link is a vote, showing relevant, tightly themed content linking each other and voting each other higher up the listings. Succeeding on the Internet takes time and a LOT of hard work.

Is a Podcast Difficult to Produce?

Podcasting is one of those basic tactics that everyone who wants to sell information products over the internet should be involved in. It's like blogging. The only thing that should get in the way is a limit on your available time that forces you to specialize in a particular basic expertise building technique.

In short I'm always recommending podcasting to my coaching clients. But every once in a while I'll get a question along the lines of "Is a podcast difficult to produce?"

Now I could be real terse and simply say no. But there are several elements to that question. So since I'm writing an article and it has to be a minimum length let me give you a better explanation.

First off, to produce a podcast has a specific meaning and the meaning I'm sure my student meant. Properly used the phrase "producing a podcast" really means managing all those tasks required to generate a podcast. And since podcasts tend to be such a simple recording there isn't much need for managing them. And since there isn't much need to manage them it isn't likely that they would be difficult. But again that really doesn't answer my student's question.

So let's keep worrying at it by changing the definition of the word and then looking at the difficulty of each step.

What does it take to produce (i.e. create) a podcast and is any part of it difficult?

There are nine steps in producing a podcast. But the first four are niche issues... once you've done the work you don't need to worry about them until you change your niche. So as far as the podcast is concerned they aren't normally a problem. So what are the next five steps?

1. Determine your topic for the week. Okay, this can be a pain. But if you do it in groups you can usually create a series of podcasts based on a single idea.

2. Write your script (aka design your podcast for the week). Remember that a podcast is short -- fifteen minutes to a half hour or so. We're talking about three major points with three items per major point for a fifteen minute show -- at most! It should take you one to two times the length of time for your show to write the script. Difficult? Not at all.

3. Record your script. You're going to sit down at the computer with a headset on. You're going to record the script. For each point you're going to talk for 1 minute. Add some intro time. Every time you make a mistake record the time and keep going. Now do it again. Time consuming but easy!

4. Now you're going to edit the recording. Use a tool like Wavepad. Remember those mistakes you made a note of? You're going to remove them. Use the other recordings to give you material if you need it. Again time consuming but easy.

5. Now you're going to post it to your website. How you do it depends on your site and can run from child's play to easy.

So is a podcast difficult to produce? It may take time but it's really easy.

How Mental Attitude and Digestion Affect Acne

Mental attitude

Acne is an expression of toxins in the body that are not being released through normal channels of elimination, so they come out through the skin. Since mental attitude and thoughts cannot be separate from the body, thoughts and feelings are also being expressed as acne.

Negative thoughts and feelings produce chemicals that are toxic acids. Just like toxic acids created in the colon, the toxic thoughts need to be eliminated through the 5 elimination channels

Acne can be an expression suppressed past traumatic experiences. As a child, when you were exposed to experiences that overwhelm you - constant mental, physical, or sexually abuse, you suppress them. So now as an adult, as your defense system weakens, you're not able to completely suppress this information, so it becomes expressed as acne or other skin disorders. Of course, these suppressed experiences can be expressed as other diseases.

Acne can also be related to the emotion of fear or anxiety. It can also be an expression of holding onto old junkie or unpleasant memories. It's a way of holding on to and burying the junkie or toxic memory into your face. It is these memories that are trying to surface and, in an usual way, asking you to face them. Many times, you and other people may not want to remember them or deal with them.

To deal with them requires a lot of strength and help from a psychotherapist.

Stomach Acid

Your stomach uses Hydrochloric acid (HCl) to break down protein. It also has many other functions,

* Kills pathogens and microbes and prevents them from getting into the colon and blood * Controls the adsorption of B12 * Controls the adsorption of iron calcium zinc, copper, magnesium and most B-complex vitamins * Controls the adsorption of vitamin C * Created indigestion * Prevents constipation

When you have low levels of HCl chances are that you will be susceptible to getting acne. HCl can be increased by using a digestive enzyme that contains HCl.

Pancreatic Digestive Enzymes

When the food you eat passes the stomach and enters the small intestine, the pancreas releases digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to help complete the digestive process.

The bicarbonate helps to reduce the acid strength in the food coming from the stomach. The digestive enzymes digest carbohydrates, fats, and protein.

When the pancreas loses its efficiency and starts to release less digestive enzymes, less food is properly digested. This results in more undigested food reaching the colon. When this happens, the undigested food, if it stays to long in the colon, becomes a source for rotting matter and toxic material. This toxic material can get into your blood and cause skin disruption such as acne.

A healthy pancreas, which provides the necessary digestive juices to digest the food you eat, is needed for healthy skin and for eliminating acne and other skin sores and eruptions.

When you have acne or other skin diseases, they are created when there is an in-balance in your body and that includes many different organs and body processes and systems - your thoughts, digestion, liver, kidney, lymphatic system, lungs, and pancreas.

Portable Greenhouses - How Far They Can Be Beneficial for Your Backyard?

The benefits of portable greenhouses are far beyond the expectation of gardeners. Whether you are a professional grower or a hobbyist gardener, you can always experience the positive effects of a green garden house built in your backyard. If you make a careful selection, you will start to get the benefits from the first day of its use. It is very necessary to select the right kind of greenhouse for use in your backyard. Greenhouse kits are now available in different sizes to meet your specific requirements. For less serious gardening needs, you can choose from smaller types of sunrooms and greenhouses that come in the form of hobby greenhouses or mini greenhouses and portable greenhouses. However, you can think of purchasing a greenhouse only after considering the actual garden space available, its location, the way you would like it to be used and your budget range.

Whether you have recently started gardening or just want to experiment with newer types of vegetable of flower plants than what you are growing so far, it will take some time to find the best location for portable greenhouse. It would always be advantageous for you to purchase green garden house kits rather than using your own idea for building something effective. Portable greenhouses are easily available in different sizes, shapes and styles and it is good to look for the one that can ensure you the best outcome. They are easy to set up, quick to take down and compact for storage. There is huge scope for you to purchase the one which really suits your plan and purpose. You might be residing in an area where growing seasons are very short due to intense heat or cold. But portable greenhouse kits come with many useful features that would help you control your greenhouse environment for better growth and productivity. If you want to extend the growing season portable greenhouses assure to give a good start.

The starter plants are often expensive but portable greenhouses give gardeners a more economical option in starting seeds and keep them protected from extreme weather conditions. If you are concerned about the safety of your vegetable or flower plants that are in the ground, you can cover the rows with the help of a garden tunnel greenhouse. Another major point to consider portable greenhouses is that they let grow your plants in a well-balanced environment without getting exposed to pests and animals. As a result, use of fungicides and pesticides is not required to help your plants remain healthy and grow fast. An electric heater can be installed inside a greenhouse for regulating the temperature during cloudy and cold days. The only thing that you have to ensure is to supply it with electric power and make it functional. The vents will also be there in portable greenhouses so that excess heat can be released and air circulation can be facilitated for maintaining the temperature. When the atmosphere gets too hot, a covering is required to reduce the damaging effect of heat. Drip irrigation and greenhouse misting systems help make the atmosphere favorable for your plant growth.

Entering The Kingdom Of God Today

Jesus used many ways to bring his word to people's hearts and minds. In Luke's Gospel we meet a surprising word; "forces" as he explains how the climax of the ages has arrived with himself, and the breaking into history of the royal reign of God; "The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.' Hang on, this sounds a bit frenzied! Why so much eagerness to enter the kingdom of God? What's going on?

1. A whole new day has dawned

A decisive turning point has come. God's clock has struck 'Now is the time to come into the spiritual kingdom of God's Son to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life. This is God's final message for mankind - a message so great and good you will never be able to sit on the fence about it!'

With Jesus' coming into the world, God has kept his promise that he would send the Saviour, the very Son of God himself, who would deal with sin - the awful revolt against heaven's authority - and deal with it finally. He would even die paying the ransom price for others so that an untold number of rebels might be freed, and reconciled to God.

Jesus' words would have startled his first hearers. Even his disciples were hoping that Rome's Imperial rule would be thrown off by Jesus becoming a warrior-king Messiah, who would rule in Jerusalem like David and Solomon of old. They had a nationalistic dream for an earthly 'kingdom of God' but Jesus' kingdom was not of this world - that was not what they wanted at all.

Then after Jesus' crucifixion, his rising, his ascension and the outpoured Spirit of God - these mighty acts of God, usher in the beginning of the End Time. Later, many came to see that Jesus had fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies and how God's purpose was so different from their own earthly kingdom dream. Peter even quotes Joel's prophecy how the 'last days' have arrived with God pouring out his Spirit. Now the good news of God's salvation would be offered freely to Jew and Gentile alike, to all the nations of the world. A wonderful purpose, so much larger than their own earlier little ideas!

2. The Good news is so good - suddenly there is a huge opportunity

Did you ever see people camping out and queuing outside celebrity high street stores for fantastic sale items? Many will nearly go to any lengths to get that one designer label 'thing' - whatever they have dreamed about until they are possessed with this 'must have' determination. Well, translate that sort of determination into the scene described in Luke's Gospel, except here we are dealing with more vital issues, and you get an idea of these words, "and everyone forces his way into it."

When the Spirit of God begins to open people's eyes to see what is on offer, they make strenuous efforts to enter by the narrow door. Jesus is talking about a great return, back to God himself. Just because his first hearers were direct descendents of Abraham, did not qualify them for the Kingdom of God. This came as quite shock. They thought once they had thrown off imperial Rome and had their own messianic king, they would all be in the kingdom of God! But now people must face the royal proclamation of a crucified and risen Saviour! They must enter God's kingdom on his terms, or not at all. They must be born again.

This is why, when people see what is at stake - the issue of receiving the gift of eternal life, of peace with God, of a home in glory with the risen Lord himself - they seek God and desire above all else to be found by him. They become focused on receiving what the good news of God's grace and love is offering freely to all. Now they must have it for themselves. And they become gripped - almost overwhelmed by this great quest.

So this little word 'force' or 'pressing', is talking about the manner in which large numbers of people suddenly see this extraordinary offer of free salvation and eagerly desire it for themselves. They see this as the greatest of all offers of a great salvation fully secured by Jesus' death, when he shed his blood and paid the price in full for sin - and they ask to receive God's forgiveness and eternal life.

This word from the lips of the Son of God is about the great change that his coming would make. It emphasises the great necessity to turn from the darkness of empty religion to the light and love of Christ. We also see this word 'forcing' in the wider context of Jesus' ministry and how, for instance, on the Day of Pentecost, thousands of people surged into the kingdom of God.

3. This same message is for today

How does this relate to you? This great quest is not a reward for your determination, or salvation would be your due - but it's not your due - you don't deserve it - salvation is a free gift!God's gift of eternal life is wholly undeserved, and the good news is so good, suddenly there is a huge opportunity - like an open door! You let nothing stand in your way as you turn with strong resolve and trust the Lord Jesus as your own Saviour. You trust in him alone and know he has accepted you, as God's grace enables you to press into the Kingdom of God. Enter in today.

Capitalism and Communism Don't Mix - Neither Do Socialism and Capitalism

Many believe that capitalist nations can get along with communist nations and that we can learn from each other - that we can involve ourselves in trade and commerce as a bridge to peace. I completely disagree, and every time the US seems to try such a notion it ends up bad for them or us, and in the end there are hurt feelings on both sides. This is because capitalism and communism do not mix. One is based on the right to free contact, along with personal freedom and liberty.

The other, communism works to control the flows of labor and micro-manage everything. Why? It has too, or the population will get wise, reject communism seeing the light of FREEDOM! Socialism is another way to run a nation, but it also gets into severe problems when the government runs out of rich folks to tax to redistribute their money.

Currently, China is in a traditional phase, and going to experience huge inflationary challenges, as their hands have over-stepped their bounds. Today, China is using price controls to slow inflation, even demanding that farmers to grow more vegetables. Now then, it is true that capitalist nations have been able to work with communist and socialist nations in trade, but it is usually unfair and unbalanced.

First of all, capitalist nations can easily out produce other nations. And when a communist nation has government run businesses, it generally puts the workforce into "slave labor type situations" or you can call it economic enslavement if you'd like. This is good for the communist leaders because a few who are running the Communist Party can collect all the money and get rich, and the capitalist nations don't complain as they are able to buy things cheaper from these nations.

Of course this also goes against freedom and liberty because now the capitalist nation and the communist nation are involving themselves in free trade, while exploiting people, which is totally unacceptable in a nation that stands for freedom and liberty. Likewise, with a socialist nation, the socialism manifests its way into the work force, and the government controls the businesses, or even becomes one with the businesses its state owned agencies.

In doing so this reduces the productivity levels, and the state becomes a business, which is the opposite of capitalism, although it pretends to participate in capitalism it rarely actually does. Sure, things are good for a while when a communist or socialist nation pretends to practice at least part of capitalism theory, but in the end they revert back to micromanagement and control, and no real progress was made for their people in the end or they come up and then end up sliding back down. If they are lucky the climb up two steps and only slide back one.

These realities often lead to collapse. A communist nation or a socialist nation should stay with whatever is working for them. But the cold hard reality is communism is socialism has never worked for the people, it's a dead end, and it causes the life experience of entire populations of human beings and renders them wasted. Only freedom and liberty, and a capitalist society can harness the power and the innate characteristics of the human species.

Creating a beehive of humanity will not work, and these are some of the reasons that capitalism, communism, and socialism do not mix in free markets and world trade - they can't, and we are fools for pretending so. Of course in my humble opinion this is only one of the human follies I see as self-evident. Indeed, hope you please consider all this.
